Our Journey to Newmarket

Discover how our owner, Phil Cunningham, turned a lifelong hobby into a thriving business that’s based on solid values and a desire to do things differently.

The Big Idea

With many years of experience under his belt, it was only a matter of time until Phil Cunningham established his own private training facility.

Rebel Racing Ltd was established in 2016 as a unique private training operation in Newmarket. The business was named after Phil’s first wholly owned thoroughbred, Cockney Rebel, who won both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas in 2007.

Phil’s aim for the business was, and still is, simple: never copy, always innovate. He employs trainer, Richard Spencer, to train his horses according to unique principles in a modern, boutique style environment

Sefton Lodge Stables

The Rebel Playground

Rebel Racing started life at Albert House Stables before our team expanded into Sefton Lodge, our primary training yard. The majority of horses are independently owned by Phil Cunningham, whilst some are owned by syndicates or in partnership with friends and family of Phil Cunningham.

We have invested in extensive renovations at the property in recent years to ensure our facilities meet our exacting standards.

We also look after our mares, foals and yearlings from our stud farm, The Rebel Stud (Swynford Paddocks), which is a short 10 minute drive from our training yard and well positioned for Newmarket Racecourse and The National Stud.

Rebel Bloodstock Ltd

Easily one of Rebel Racing’s greatest success stories, Rajasinghe, Winner of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot now stands as a stallion at The National Stud in Newmarket.

Rajasinghe had an excellent start with his first two-year-olds, with a remarkable 80% strike rate in winners to runners.  He continues to produce an exceptional line of progeny, a sire worth serious consideration.
